The Minimalist Summer Wardrobe

Posted by Marielle T on

With Edmonton summers being as fleeting as they are, we find it hard to justify investing in an extensive summer wardrobe. Yet the bright colors and breezy sundresses achingly call our names when they arrive in our favourite local boutiques....How can we resist?

This year we’ve found the answer is creating a capsule collection of summer clothing. By focusing on a few strategic pieces, we end up buying less without being denied the juicy colours and breezy cuts that fill the closets of more southern fashionistas. These are the must-haves we're counting on for a two months of #YegSummer outings and #ExploreAlberta getaways.

1. The On Trend Piece

Angela models a jumpsuit and hat from Red Ribbon

A carefully chosen “Trend” items keeps your wardrobe looking current and can provide a surprising amount of use. We love this sophisticated romper from Red Ribbon. Add and remove layers (a tee underneath, a cropped cardy overtop) as the temperature fluctuates. An always-in-season felt hat will help seamlessly transfer the look from summer to fall with the addition of a jean jacket and heels.

2. The Showstopping Piece

All dressed up with someplace to go, thank you to Red Ribbon

If you have a social calendar filled with weekend weddings and summer soirees, you can’t beat a big-impact co-ordinating skirt and blouse. The pair can be dressed up or down depending on the accessories and, even better, can be split up to create whole new looks with clothes you already have in your wardrobe.

3. The Boosted Piece

Angela is eye-catching in picks from Floc Boutique

Shake off the cozy neutrals of the colder months with vibrant prints and pops of colour that are synonymous with summer. Quality materials like linen and silk will last multiple summers, are more comfortable in the heat than synthetics, and are a fuss-free level up from the usual cotton t-shirt. Pretty blouses go from workplace to the patio in a snap.

4. The Strut Piece

 Selfie-ready in a Red Ribbon vintage-inspired dress

An item that makes you feel like a million bucks is worth the purchase, even if you can only wear it for a few months of the year. It will become your go-to all summer, and will make pulling it out each spring feel even more special. The vintage vibe of this polka dot dress is a heart-stopper and can be adapted from day to day with a change of shoes, layers and jewellery.
