To Market to Market

The bustling hum of outdoor markets on a beautiful day is the surest sign that summer is just around the corner. Bursting with fresh produce, baked goods and flowers these markets are the destination for discerning home cooks and people-watchers alike.

There are countless markets throughout the Edmonton and area and so we have rounded up some of our favourites you won't want to miss this summer. Searching for another market? You can find a full list here

The All-Season Market

Come rain or shine the Old Strathcona Farmer's Market is a treat for all your senses. Be sure to treat yourself to the tastiest fresh pesto and pasta from Pasta Delight for the easiest mid-week dinner and don't forget to taste the chicken rosemary sausage from Sunworks! Arrive earlier in the morning to avoid sold-out essentials and mid-day crowds. Instead grab a Transcend coffee at the back of the market and then still have time for brunch at a nearby restaurant (Meat, Under the High Wheel, Next Act, Culina Millcreek and New York Bagel Cafe...just to name a few).

The Day-Trip Market

Venturing out of Edmonton is well worth the trip to visit the St. Albert Farmers Market. The market has been running for over 30 years and is the largest outdoor farmers market in Western Canada. Striking the perfect balance between fresh food and one-of-a-kind home goods you can easily while away an afternoon exploring the market at a relaxed small town pace.

The Urbanite Market

Kicking off the May long weekend, the 104 st Market is up and running for the summer! In addition to the expected farmers market standbys this market has a handful of culinary wildcards such as 'Bo&Marrow' and 'Green Eggs and Ham' as well as being host some of the best local makers including Bang Bang Bijou and Uppercase Press. Finish off your visit to the market by walking over to the legislature and hopping on the street car to take you back to the south side for a stunning view of the River Valley.

The Date Night Market

A hop-skip and a jump away from our little corner of High Street is the 124 st Market running on Thursday evenings throughout the summer. Flanked on both ends with food trucks, Moonshine donuts and other delicious things to nosh on, this market is the perfect out-of-the-box date night. Go for a stroll to create a tasting meal and then wander over to The Manor Cafe or North 53 for a post dinner cocktail.

The Market Essentials

1. Canvas shopping bags are an absolute must. We especially love these Edmonton totes from our neighbours Plum Home Design.

2. Leave the big purse at home and switch to a small change purse or wallet for shopping ease.

3. Speaking of shopping ease, swing by a bank on the way to the market to avoid paying high ATM fees and waiting in line. While some vendors may take credit cards, Farmers Markets are primarily cash transactions only.

4. Sunscreen!!! After shopping, snacking and inevitably running into a few friends you'll be spending close to a couple of hours out in the sun. Be sure to pack your water bottle and sunscreen so you don't (literally) burn out.

5. A grocery list seems like such an obvious thing to bring, but having an idea of what you need to get makes it easy to ensure nothing is forgotten and you are all set for creating something delicious at home!
